What is a Parasailing Canopy?

Parasailing is an extreme recreational activity that is rapidly growing in popularity. Before knowing any other thing about this sport, it would be ideal for you to know the basics about its most important component—the parasailing canopy.

What is a parasailing canopy? It is an elliptical-shaped part of the parachute that is opened up and filled with air. Have you seen a parachute? Of course, you have. Now imagine that balloon-like structure that facilitates flying.

That, for parasailing is the canopy. In parasailing, a person or two would be attached to a canopy through a harness. Then, a motorboat from a water surface, or a car from the land, would tow the person or persons at great speed until the air lifts up him/ her, or them, up.

The canopy would then be opened up, until the air fills it up. Then, the person, or persons, would be suspended in the air and would travel with great velocity along with the towing transport equipment under it. Pretty exciting, isn’t it?

So what makes parasailing actually work? Well, the material that makes it up should be dacron or nylon. These are durable clothing materials that don’t easily give in to extreme heat or cold and are usually characterized with flexibility, light weight and endurance.

The parasailing canopy shouldn’t be rigid in structure. That would ensure that the gear would be functional when it is needed. There should also be a harness that would attach the person or persons in the parasailing activity to the canopy.

Through the years, sports manufacturers have also been modifying the parasailing canopy. Now there are two kinds of the gear that could be bought on the market—the hang-glider and the para-glider.

The hang glider is the original form of parasailing canopy. It usually weighs around 25 kilograms and is hand-carried though a special container that could be 15 to 20 feet in length.

On the other hand, the para-glider is the modern form of parasailing canopy. This type of gear is very lightweight at about 6 to 8 kilograms. The para-glider can be folded up and carried in a back pack. That means, you could easily carry the canopy wherever and whenever your parasailing activity would be held.

Indeed, the parasailing canopy is one gear you shouldn’t do without. There is no way you can parasail without it, so better save up to buy a good one. Good luck!
